Green-fingered? Free allotments on offer in North East Lincolnshire
The local authority says more and more people have turned to growing their own fruit and veg in recent months
If you fancy taking on the challenge of growing your own fruit and veg the council in North East Lincolnshire is offering free allotment space for the rest of the year.
The local authority is working to make more land available for growers, as demand for home grown food has increased during the pandemic.
Starting a plot for the remainder of 2021 will be free, while plot holders will be charged for 2022. Prices start at £100.
A drop in event for people interested in digging in is due to take place at Grimsby Town Town Market on Friday October 15, between 9am and 4pm.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, from North East Lincolnshire Council, said:
“Owning an allotment plot provides a number of health benefits and is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people and grow your own produce.
“Our allotments are popular and as we continue to see enquiries and interest, we are now at a stage where we can look to utilise extra space on the allotments and raise the question – are you up for the challenge?
“This latest development is aimed to support the increase in demand as owning an allotment becomes ever more popular.
"This opportunity offers plots up much quicker and allows us to expand our sites to their full potential.”
Energy firm EQUANS manages allotment sites on behalf of the local council across Grimsby, as well as in Scartho and Cleethorpes.
