More than a third of adults living in the country's most deprived areas are not getting enough physical activity, according to new research by Sport England.

The public body warned of a "postcode lottery" as its findings showed 34% of less affluent adults fell within the category, compared with only 20% from the least deprived areas.

Hull and North East Lincolnshire are among the 53 locations in England chosen to receive new government funding aimed at encouraging adults and children to be more active

Sport England invests up to £300 million of National Lottery and Government money annually into projects and programmes that help people get active and play sport.

Women, people from lower socio-economic groups and black and Asian people still remain less likely to be active than other adults, while less than half of children currently meet the Chief Medical Officer's guidelines for daily physical activity.

A Sport England report published last year found healthy, active lifestyles save the health and care system £10.5 billion a year by relieving pressure on the NHS, preventing chronic illnesses and saving money through reduced use of health services such as mental health support.

David Gent is from Active Humber, he's welcoming the funding and said:

"The Humber as an area is the second most inactive place in England. So we've got a really big challenge to tackle here. To be active, you only need to do 30 minutes of activity a week, and yet well over 40% of people aren't doing enough activity and that damages their health.

"What will be happening is we're going to listen to people in their local community of what will actually make you active. So for some sports clubs that might be more coaches, for other people, perhaps for the long-term health condition, I need a bit of help and support to get me to walk and cycle, and that damages their health, damages, their mental health.

"So this is a real challenge and this new investment coming in from Sport England is to do the very best we can in places like HU to get more people to be active, enjoy just being out in the outdoors."
