You can only expect to hear the best phrases and dialect from the place known for its fish heritage and The Mariners. If you have ever crossed paths with a Grimbarian, chances are you’ve probably heard one or more of these phrases.

Anyone from outside North East Lincolnshire might look at you as if you've got two heads if you utter any of these phrases. We've put together a list of our favourite Grimsby sayings...

'Grimbarian'

First things, first. If a person is from Grimsby, they are a 'Grimbarian'.

'Spoggy'

Talk about slang words to anyone from Grimsby, and the first thing they'll probably say is 'spoggy' which refers to chewing gum.

'Dead'

Used to substitute the word 'really'… us Grimbarians think our fish and chips are 'dead good'.

'Buggerlugs'

You may have heard your parents or grandparents say this to you or the dog as a term of endearment.
"Hey Buggerlugs, how are you?

'Lugholes'

'Clear your lugholes out, will ya!'
That's right, lugholes are the things on the side of your face, ears.

'Beeling'

If someone is 'beeling' then they are crying their eyes out and very upset.

'Mardy'

Yes, not only does this word feature in a popular Arctic Monkeys song, but it is also a word commonly used in Grimsby when someone is in a bad mood and needs to cheer up!

'Grufty'

"Get a wash, ya grufty thing!"
Someone or something that is unkept, in need of a clean is said to be 'grufty'.

'Meggies'

Cleethorpes, our seaside resort located a stone throw from Grimsby is often referred to as 'Meggies'; don't ask us why, there are many theories knocking about!

'Top town'

Need to go into town or Freshney Place Shopping Centre to pick up a few things? Probability is you'll be heading to 'top town'.
