Vigil "for peace in Ukraine" takes place on eve of Cheltenham man's funeral

A vigil is taking place at Truro Cathedral this evening (Thursday 9 March), on the evening of Chris Parry's funeral.
The 28-year-old volunteer, who lived in Cheltenham but was originally from Cornwall, was killed alongside 47-year-old Andrew Bagshaw, while attempting a "humanitarian evacuation" in Ukraine.
People in Cornwall and members of the Ukrainian community are being invited to come together for the event between 6.30pm - 9.00pm tonight.
Canon Alan Bashforth said: "There will be an opportunity to light candles, and place pictures and other memorabilia that will remind us of those we have been concerned about, who we miss and who need our prayers as the war in Ukraine continues.
"Other prayer stations and suitable activities for children will also be found around the Cathedral’s sacred space.
"People are invited to come and go as they please at the vigil. There will be times of silent and spoken prayer and times when music will be played with some of the Ukrainian music performed by The Ukrainian Sunflowers choir.
"Chris Parry’s family will be present at the vigil. Dean Simon Robinson will welcome people to the cathedral and Hugh Nelson, Bishop of St Germans, will offer some words of reflection.
"We will also pray at this service for the people of Russia who do not want the war and have suffered their own losses on the battlefields."
The funeral of Chris Parry will take place in the Cathedral tomorrow (Friday 10 March) at 2.00pm.
