Tewkesbury MP Cameron Thomas has been accused of sending intimate messages to a Ukrainian translator while on an official trip to the war-torn country.

The Liberal Democrat MP is reported to have sent WhatsApp messages to the woman including telling her “I want you” and “I wish I could stay with you for a few days”.

The Mail on Sunday first revealed the messages and reported the woman had then shown others the texts and said she felt uncomfortable.

Mr Thomas denies any wrongdoing and a spokesperson said “these are private messages between two people who have remained in contact”.

The former RAF veteran was among a list of UK politicians recently banned from visiting Russia.

Mr Thomas went to Kyiv for the third anniversary of the war and previously said he delivered essential medical aid to Ukraine.

“During a recent visit to Ukraine, I was moved by the Ukrainians’ courage and resolve; they are fighting an existential war against a numerically superior enemy, which does not distinguish between armed combatants and civilians,” he said last month.

“I am proud that the UK continues to demonstrate global leadership in support of Ukraine, but there is more that can be done.”

Cameron Thomas says he has remained in contact with the translator after the texts surfaced.

He said at the time he had pressed the Secretary of State for Defence a second time, to release £25bn in frozen Russian assets from London, and send them to Ukraine.

“I want the UK to lead Europe on this. Putin has stated clearly today what he fears most: a UK parliament united behind Ukraine.

“There is no finer endorsement of our activity than such condemnation directly from the Kremlin.

“There is a single route to a lasting peace in Europe, but it demands courage.

“We must remember that Putin chose war in peacetime. If we grant him a ceasefire, he will exploit the opportunity to regroup and rearm.

“If we instead keep Ukraine in the fight, we can achieve a lasting peace through the absolute defeat of Vladimir Putin in Ukraine.”

Mr Thomas was elected as MP in the general election last year. He became Tewkesbury’s first non-Conservative MP since 1885 after overturning a 22,410-vote majority.
