Stroud Library shuts with immediate effect after RAAC found
Gloucestershire County Council says the library is the only building with crumbling concrete after inspections were carried out
Stroud Library has closed with immediate effect after RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) was discovered in the building.
Engineers have confirmed there is no imminent risk to public safety, and the closure is a precautionary measure to allow safety checks to be carried out.
Since August last year, Gloucestershire County Council has reviewed the records of all 442 of its buildings for evidence of dangerous crumbling concrete.
Out of those, 119 inspections were carried out with priority given to school buildings.
The council says all those inspections have now been carried out and Stroud Library is the only building where evidence of RAAC has been found.
The council says it’s exploring alternative library provision and hopes to open a library pop-up at the Five Valleys Shopping Centre by next Monday (12/02).
