It's a big day in rugby news for Gloucester fans (20 October) - as it's an away day for the side - as they take on the Leicester Tigers - in the iconic Slater Cup.

It's awarded twice a year to the winners of the Gloucester Rugby and Leicester Tigers match, named after the former captain of both clubs.

On the day of the match, we now know scrum half Stephen Varney has left with immediate effect.

He's off to pursue an opportunity in the French Top-14 with the side Vannes.

He's a product of the Gloucester Rugby Academy, and was promoted to the first-team in George Skivington’s first season at the Club.

He quickly established himself as a Premiership regular alongside several players in his U18s team such as Louis Rees-Zammit and Jack Clement.

The Welshman was called up to represent Italy, whom he qualified through his Mother, in 2020 against Scotland. He has gone on to cement his place for the Azzurri, winning 30 caps to date.

'The move makes complete sense'

George Skivington said: “It’s no secret that we’re in a good position in terms of half-backs. Tomos is one of the best scrum-halves in the game, and he’s shown that in his first few appearances here. We’ve also got Caolan Englefield and Charlie Chapman here who we see a lot of potential in.

“Steve is someone I invested a lot of time and trust in when I came in, and he’s developed into a fantastic player for Club and country. It’s understandable why he wants to move and get some more regular game time.

“I’m really thankful for Steve’s contributions in Cherry & White but ultimately this move makes complete sense for all concerned.”

'A great group of lads'

Varney added: “I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at Kingsholm. There’s a great group of lads here and they’re doing some exciting stuff.

“I’d like to thank Skivs and the coaches for giving me my first shot at professional rugby, I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity I was given here,

“Finally, I’d like to thank the Gloucester fans who have supported myself and the team through my time here. They’re a special group of the fans and they deserve the good times that I hope are coming.

“Whilst I’m sad to be leaving Gloucester, it’s a great opportunity for myself personally and I’m really excited for the next chapter.”
