Residents in Gloucester were evacuated from their homes overnight as the council warned flood defences were close to overtopping.

People on Alney Island were asked to leave their homes and go to GL1 Leisure Centre.

It's a similar situation in Tewkesbury which is effectively cut off, with some villages left partly submerged.

Simon Veal's family had to leave their house by kayak, saying; "The ground flood is no longer tenable, the sewage system doesn't work and it won't be long before the water's polluted as well.

"The floors will have to come out, the plaster up to about a metre will have to come out and we'll have damaged furniture."

Marion Veal's been evacuated by boat from Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire - she says the flooding's worse than in 2007, adding: "It was a very strange flood this time because it came up so slowly to start with and then from about 3pm when it looked reasonable suddenly the flood came up.

"For us it came in at the back and it knocked the floodgate out." Across the area there's 32 flood warnings and 26 flood alerts in force
