Plans for extra CCTV and street lighting to help make Gloucester Park safer
Gloucester's been awarded £500,000 from the Government's Safer Streets Fund
There are plans to make Gloucester Park safer by installing CCTV and improving the street lighting.
Gloucester has been granted more £500,000 from the Safer Streets fund to improve the park and the area around Sinope Street and Napier Street.
Gloucester City Council say they know that people feel safer when there is good CCTV and lighting and want to know what people think about the proposals.
Gloucestershire’s Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner secured £1m of government funding to help women and girls feel safer in the county.
A total of £544,428 of this will go towards funding cameras and lighting around Gloucester Park and a dedicated community engagement role to work on outreach with women and girls around the area.
Funds will also go towards supporting the Nelson Trust’s Sex Worker Outreach programme, which helps vulnerable women in the city.
Gloucestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Chris Nelson said the funding was fantastic news for the county and is essential to help women and girls feel safer on local streets.
“My team and its partners have excelled themselves with innovative solutions, which I hope will start to tackle the systemic fear and abuse women and girls face every day,” he said.
“While this is positive news, this money won’t provide an overnight fix.
“It is our responsibility as a society to shift the culture of women being held accountable for wicked and unacceptable violence by men.
“This is why tackling violence against women and girls is a key priority in my police and crime prevention plan.”
