Plans for a new drive-thru Burger King in Cheltenham approved
Once built it should create 30-full time jobs
A new Burger King drive-thru has been allowed to open in Cheltenham despite fears queues of cars backing up onto the main road.
Cheltenham Borough Council has approved plans this week to build the new fast food restaurant at the town’s Gallagher Retail Park in Tewkesbury Road.
The Crown Estate has been granted permission to build the fast food restaurant, external seating area, parking next to The Food Warehouse store opposite the Sainsbury’s petrol station.
The proposed restaurant will be occupied by Burger King and is expected to open seven days a week, between 10am and 11pm.
The new drive-thru is expected to create around 30 full time jobs and its design will be that of a fairly typical Burger King.
Kirill Malkin, speaking on behalf of the Crown Estate, told the planning committee that the drive-thru will be complementary to what is on the site already and he said the highways department is happy with the proposals.
"It’s a positive redevelopment of a redundant, underused piece of land."
Councillor Bernie Fisher (LD, Swindon Village) said he did not think the drive-thru was necessary and the car park operates above its maximum capacity at peak times.
He expressed concerns over cars queuing back onto the main road.
“I have grave concerns about the highways implications. It will detract from what is a very good retail park.”
