UNISON: Phlebotomists 'have shown courage standing up for themselves'
They're are urging the chief executive of the local NHS Foundation Trust to meet them face-to-face
Phlebotomists in Gloucestershire are urging the chief executive of the local NHS Foundation Trust to meet them face-to-face.
This has come from the UNISON union, amid the continued walkout of dozens of the staff members, who specialise in taking patient blood samples.
They've written to chief executive Kevin McNamara to call for direct face-to-face talks to resolve their ongoing pay dispute, says UNISON today (Wednesday).
The union's members first contacted Mr McNamara in September last year to raise concerns about being paid at the wrong grade. Despite reaching their 70th day of strike action today the trust boss has still not met with them, says the union.
The phlebotomists currently earn just £12.36 per hour, only 15p above the legal minimum wage. According to NHS guidance, staff with their skills, knowledge and experience should be earning at least 77p more per hour than they currently do, says the union.
A formal NHS job evaluation panel reviewed their case earlier this year. A majority of panel members agreed the workers are on the wrong band, says UNISON, but before a decision could be finalised, the panel was shut down by senior trust managers.

UNISON South West regional organiser Chris Roche said: “These trained specialists support patients with complex needs and take blood samples in challenging circumstances.
“They’ve shown incredible courage in standing up for themselves and have been through the correct process. But they’ve been met with nothing but excuses and silence.
“It’s time for Kevin McNamara to stop hiding behind his senior team and meet with the workers affected. Patients and staff deserve better.”
A statement from Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust previously told us: "The Trust recognises and appreciates the valuable contribution that our phlebotomists make to patient care and we will continue to work closely in partnership with our local union representatives and phlebotomists to resolve these issues."
The phlebotomists have now extended their strike action to Sunday 22 June.
