The charity said pets can find Christmas trees and larger decorations confusing as they are not used to new objects and smells.

It is also a difficult time for animals as they may be uncomfortable with an increased number of visitors.

Nicky Spanswick, Operations Manager, at Cheltenham Animal Shelter said: "we start bring trees into the house, having decorations we wouldn't have.

"It's a very peculiar time for animals so it's important we take that into consideration, it's a strange time for them as well.

Nicky suggested giving animals time to get used to trees before bringing them inside.

She said: "You could desensitise them to the object a couple of day in advance, by putting them in your garden or in your hallway."

"The main important thing is making sure you listen to your animals if they're showing you that they're nervous or scared."
