Some patients at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital were moved to other wards after a small fire broke out this morning.

The fire occurred on the 8th floor of the tower block at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital just before 8am this morning (November 4).

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said the fire was quickly contained and the fire service attended and confirmed the area was safe.

They added that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning battery unit powering a mobile computer, and there is no ongoing risk.

As a precaution, the hospital temporarily moved some patients to other wards in line with its fire safety protocols.

Relatives of the affected patients are being contacted directly by the hospital.

The Trust said no patients were harmed during the incident, but several staff members were treated for smoke inhalation.

The affected ward has been shut temporarily and is undergoing a deep clean and enhanced ventilation.

It will remain closed until it is safe to reopen.

Chief Operating Officer Al Sheward said, “In addition to our gratitude to the Fire Service, we would like to offer sincere thanks to all our colleagues for their prompt and coordinated response.

"Their unwavering focus on patient safety and mutual support truly made a difference. Their efforts were exceptional.”
