Olympic gold for Gloucestershire equestrians
It’s the first gold in eventing for GB since 1972
Team GB have won another gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics with victory in equestrian's eventing team competition.
Two thirds of the team are from Gloucestershire as Cheltenham's Laura Collett and Stroud's Tom McEwen teamed up with Oliver Townend to claim Great Britain's first title in the event since 1972.
All three riders were making their Games debuts.
Britain finished on a score of 86.30, and it is a third equestrian medal in Tokyo for Team GB following Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester and Charlotte Fry winning dressage team bronze, and Dujardin – who trains in Newent - also collecting an individual bronze.
Laura Collett, who dropped places individually after having one fence down, said of her horse, London 52, "He was his normal self at the start, then I think there was a reflection off the water and he just spooked, basically.
"He got it back together. It's a shame, but it could have been a whole lot worse in that situation. It was a very clever course."
