A new report looking at the impact of the Gloucester City Safe Scheme is recommending more patrols and the use of facial recognition to help tackle crime.
Shops get radios and access to a database showing know offenders, they also work with a team of City Protection Officers who patrol the city centre.
Students from the University of Gloucestershire produced a study which shows the benefits of the scheme and makes suggestions of what could be improved.
As one of the UK’s 250 not-for-profit Business Crime Reduction Partnerships (BCRP), the Gloucester City Safe Scheme liaises with the police and local authorities to tackle and reduce crime and disorder affecting businesses.
Launched in 2014, the Scheme membership comprises 200 businesses – including restaurants, bars, retail establishments and transport services – operating in Gloucester, Stroud and nearby areas.
