Counter-terrorism police have arrested a 29-year-old man from Cheltenham on suspicion of terrorism offences, after a woman was stabbed outside a leisure centre in Cheltenham.

Police were called to Leisure Centre at Cheltenham on Thursday at 9.15pm, after reports a woman had been stabbed.

She sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment, where she remains in a serious condition.

The man in custody had previously been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident, but police have now confirmed he has also been arrested under the Terrorism Act.

A warrant allowing further detention has been obtained, and he can now be held up to Thursday 9th March.

Police say that, due to specific details of the incident, Counter Terrorism Policing South East are now leading the investigation.

Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone of Gloucestershire Constabulary says, "I would like to reassure those living locally or visiting the county that we believe this was an isolated incident and we are not aware of any wider threat to members of the public. We are working closely with our partners in Counter Terrorism Policing."

Police are still appealing for information, and anyone with information is asked to contact officers on 101.
