Holocaust Memorial Day marked across Gloucestershire
Events will be taking place across the weekend.
Holocaust Memorial Day is a day for everyone to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust under Nazi persecution. It also recognises the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.
At Gloucester Guild Hall today (26/1) members of the Three Counties Liberal Jewish Community, GayGlos, and Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (GARAS) congregated to reflect on the horrors of the Holocaust.
The event also reflected on genocides still happening around the world.
Adele Owen, director of GARAS spoke at the event. She said: "If we don't learn from history we just keep making the same mistakes. So it's a good opportunity to remember and consider what hate can do, and hopeful try to build a better world."
Mark Walton, a member of the Three Counties Liberal Jewish Community, said: "It's hugely important as a Jew to remember the Holocaust, but also because of the increase of anti-Semitism I've seen recently."
"It's very important to remember genocides haven't just happened under Nazi Germany we still have terrible events ongoing all over the world."
To mark the occasion, landmarks across the country will be lighting up tomorrow (27/1).
