Rugby stars to cycle 555 Miles from Kingsholm to support Doddie Weir
HRH The Princess Royal will be handing over the match ball as the star studded cyclists head to Scotland's Six Nations match vs Wales
The team of rugby legends, including former Scotland captain Rob Wainwright and World Cup winning England captain Martin Johnson, will cycle 555 miles in 48 hours from Gloucester Rugby's Kingsholm stadium to deliver the match ball for Scotland's Six Nations tie against Wales.
HRH The Princess Royal will kick off the bike ride at Kingsholm, before they travel to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff and then onto Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium for the Doddie Weir Cup on Saturday (1th February).
Rob Wainright, the founder of Doddie Aid and former teammate of Weir, will lead 200 cyclists across a gruelling route which will see them pass rugby clubs across Wales, England and Scotland.
They'll then arrive at the Scotland vs Wales Six Nations game, where they'll return the match ball back the HRH The Princess Royal.
The bike ride takes place during the last week of Doddie Aid 2023, a national fundraising event where over 38,000 fundraisers across the UK have raised as much money as possible for Motor Neurone disease research.
Before setting off on the gruelling ride Rob Wainwrght says, "This year marks the fourth anniversary of the Doddie Weir Cup, and it’s particularly poignant as it’s the first since Doddie’s passing in November, but this only drives us forward to continue making progress and raising awareness of MND.
“We have to believe that a breakthrough in MND treatment is just round the corner, and push ourselves and others to raise funds to realise that dream.”
The teams are aiming to raise over £500,000, and you can donate through the Doddie Cup 555 Ride page.
