Gloucestershire therapist says not enough people reach out for help
1 in 3 UK adults don’t seek metal health support due to stigma
New research reveals three quarters of us often feel anxious, nervous, or on edge yet 1 in 3 UK adults don’t seek mental health support due to the stigma surrounding it.
Online therapy platform ‘Better Help’ have released a ‘State of Stigma’ report aimed at breaking down barriers to care.
The platform supports thousands of people across the UK with therapists based throughout England, including Gloucestershire.
In research conducted as part of the ‘State of Stigma’ report it was found that 1 in 5 UK adults view those who seek therapy as 'mentally weak'.
Victoria Wren, is a therapist in Gloucestershire who works for the platform.
She told Greatest Hits Radio how beneficial therapy can be: “with more self-awareness there’s often more acceptance of others because there’s more acceptance of self.
“So really tuning in to who we are as people helps everybody in terms of accepting mental health and wellbeing as part of life.”
She also mentioned that many people hesitate to reach out until they are completely overwhelmed.
“There are particular themes that bring people toward therapy.
“Sometimes challenges in regard to work situations, relationship challenges.
“Reaching out for help often comes at points of crisis.”
