General Election: What's changed in Gloucestershire?
The results of the 2024 General Election have been counted.
Labour have gained seats in the Forest of Dean, Gloucester and Stroud. Whilst the Liberal Democrats have taken seats in Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, and South Cotswolds. Meanwhile, the North Cotswolds stay Conservative.
In Cheltenham, the Justice Secretary, Alex Chalk lost his seat to Liberal Democrat Max Wilkinson. Conservative, Alex Chalk, had held the seat since 2015. But following the 2019 general election he only retained a slim majority.
Meanwhile, in the Forest of Dean, Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, has lost his seat to Labour's Matt Bishop. Despite the constituency being Conservative since 2005.
In Gloucester, Labour candidate Alex McIntyre has taken the seat from Conservative, Richard Graham. The seat has been known as a bellweather constituency since 1979, meaning it’s been passed between the two major parties in the same way as the government. Richard Graham has held the seat since 2010.
Over into Stroud, another Conservative MP, Siobhan Baillie, has lost her seat to Simon Opher, from the Labour party.
The Conservatives also lost a seat in Tewkesbury- to the Liberal Democrats. The seat was held by Laurence Robertson since 1997. Liberal Democrat, Cameron Thomas, has been appointed as the new MP.
Whilst in the newly formed North Cotswold seat, which formerly made up one half of the Cotswolds constituency, the Conservatives have won a seat. With Geoffrey Clifton-Brown appointed as the MP.
And in the other half of the old Cotswold's constituency, now known as South Cotswolds, it was another gain for the Liberal Democrats. With Roz Savage appointed as the new MP.
