Gloucestershire fire and rescue share tips for protecting your home from fire risks
Advice includes regular home safety checks and the importance of working smoke alarms
Following a series of fatal house fires in Gloucestershire and across the country Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is sharing key fire safety advice to help people protect themselves and their homes.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Nathaniel Hooton says that early prevention is crucial as he urges the public to utilise the resources and support the Fire and Rescue Service offers, such as home fire safety visits and checks.
Nathaniel told Greatest Hits Radio that working smoke alarms are essential for ensuring early warning of a fire, saying: “If you have the unfortunate event of a fire in your house, smoke alarms will enable you to have early warning and allow you to escape early.”
Night-time safety routines can also be a vital measure.
Closing internal doors at night, knowing escape routes, ensuring access to keys, and discussing these plans with the entire household can make a significant difference in an emergency.
Nathaniel added: “Making sure your family are aware of what to do when they hear a smoke alarm is crucial.
“Simple pre-planning and having a clear route out are essential steps to safety.”
Additional advice included turning off non-essential electrical items before bed and cooking safely without distraction to avoid fires starting in the first place.
Emerging risks and seasonal precautions
With an increase in fires caused by lithium batteries, we’re also being reminded to check that items are purchased from reputable sources, are not damaged, and are used according to manufacturer instructions.
Fire risks can also be linked to colder weather, homeowners are being advised to sweep chimneys regularly and ensure both carbon monoxide and smoke alarms are installed.
As candles are often used more during colder months, it’s recommended to place them on non-combustible surfaces, not to leave them unattended or burning overnight, and dispose of smoking materials correctly.
