18-year-old Zafeera Karim is co-chairing a Youth Select Committee that is conducting an inquiry into the links between social media and youth violence.

The member of Youth Parliament for Gloucester and Forest of Dean has told us how the issue is prevalent across the UK.

The inquiry is exploring a range of topics including whether social media companies do enough to protect young people from dangerous and violent content and how well age restrictions are enforced.

The select committee have launched a call for evidence and are asking people to come forward with their experiences.

They are also consulting with experts in the field, people who work in youth settings and politicians.

Zafeera said: "We chose this topic because the rise of youth violence and connections to social media can't be ignored.

"Research shows that 60% of youngsters have encountered violent content online - and this isn't a fleeting experience.

"Such content can desensitise young minds and normalise aggression. This demands urgent attention".

She added: "For me, this inquiry is about restoring a sense of peace both online and offline.

"Youth violence and influence of SM are issues that deeply resonate with young people across the UK - and youngsters in Gloucester and the Forest of Dean are no different.

"In our community I've spoken to various young people who have experienced pressures and dangers of violent content online".
