Gloucester Rugby Union player Ed Slater has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and retired from the sport with immediate effect.
Following six months of testing, the 33-year-old's diagnosis was confirmed last week.
The lock joined the Cherry and Whites from Leicester Tigers in 2017. He's since made 89 Gloucester appearances and returned to the England Saxons squad.
'Gloucester Rugby is entirely committed to supporting Ed'
In a statement on the Club's website, Gloucester Rugby said Slater's retirement from professional rugby was a "difficult decision".
"Everyone at Gloucester Rugby - players, management and staff - are entirely committed to supporting Ed, his wife Jo and his three children in whatever way required. We know the same will be true of Gloucester and Leicester fans, and the wider rugby community," the Club added.
A fundraising page has since been opened by Gloucester Rugby, with a target of £20,000. It's expected the funds will go towards Slater's family and/or a MND charity.
