People around the city are coming together to celebrate and enjoy the historic Gloucester Day events.

Stalls from local organisations, community groups and charities surround the Gloucester Cross for visitors to enjoy. People can take part in raffles, treat themselves to some rainbow accessories and learn more about local groups such as the Gloucestershire Freemasons. Stalls from local organisations, community groups and charities surround the Gloucester Cross.

The event celebrates the lifting of the Siege of Gloucester, when the city held out against forces during the First English Civil War, 379 years ago.

As well as the stalls visitors are being entertained by a Gloucester Day Parade. The procession will make its way through the four main gated streets led by the Mayor of Gloucester, Cllr Howard Hyman and the Sheriff of Gloucester, Cllr Joanne Brown.

Veterans of the armed forces, cadets and representatives of the emergency services will march past Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

The sound of the Gloucester Cathedral bells filled the city at midday and were joined by the ringing from other Gloucesters around the world. Including Gloucester in the USA, Sierra Leone, Papua New Guinea, Canada and Australia.

Town Crier and Gloucester Day is organiser, Alan Myatt, said: “The people of Gloucester always give massive support to this event which has grown over the years to become one of the most popular events on the calendar and we try to make if bigger every time.

“Having their Royal Highnesses here will make it all the more special.”

The event is supported by Gloucester City Council.

Cllr Richard Cook said: “We are delighted to be supporting this wonderful event that honors everything that is great about Gloucester. I would encourage as many people as possible to come out and support Gloucester Day and to celebrate our beautiful and historic city.”

The day's events will go on through to the evening.
