Gloucester City Council are determined to make the city a key tourist destination in the county.

£1.9 million of funding has been secured from Historic England to invest in the Cathedral Quarter Project.

It will see historic buildings revived and refurbished fit for modern use as well as make them eye-catching features for visitors to enjoy.

The tourism sector across the country has suffered due the pandemic and the city council and hoping to turn things around and make it another hotspot for tourists to visit in Gloucestershire.

Richard Cook, Leader of Gloucester City Council, said: "Gloucestershire is a tourist destination but we're struggling to make Gloucester that place people want to come.

"When all the hotels are built around the city which we're planning at the moment, there'll be places to stay and things to do which will hopefully encourage people to not come for just one day, but two, three, four or even five days.

"We don't want our heritage to fall down or to be demolished. We want to maintain it and provide that interest for people to come and enjoy."

What is the Cathedral Quarter Project

The scheme will support improvements to the quality of the heritage buildings in and around Westgate Street.

It'll focus on fixing an inappropriate alterations and encourage uses for historic buildings.

Grants are being offered for restoring authentic architectural details and materials to the frontages of historic buildings and bring vacant floor space back into beneficial use.

The project will also deliver a series of event and activities to celebrate the history of Westgate and to help property owners and residents to become involved with the conservation aims of the project.
