In a tribute to the Swindon teenager, Jake Smith, his family have urged others to think about water safety.

The 17 year old died over the May Bank holiday weekend after playing in the River Thames with his 4 friends.

In a short statement the family want to thank the Lechlade community for their support, "We unfortunately lost Jake in a tragic accident. The support and messages we have received have been overwhelming, and shows the love that people had.

"Jake will be missed by all his family and friends.

"We would like to thank the emergency services, the community and especially The Riverside for their kindness and support.

"Although this was a tragic accident, we urge people to stop and think before they jump into the river."

Specialist police divers began their search on the banks of The Riverside Pub before recovering a body at the Round House downstream

Emergency services were called on Sunday night (30 April) after Jake failed to resurface from the water. His friends who were him and jumped back in to try and find him have been accounted for.

On arrival, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue began their searches until the early hours of Monday morning.

Returning later the same day, specialist police divers recovered the body near the Round House further down stream from Lechlade-on-Thames' The Riverside Pub.

At this time Jake's death is not being treated as suspicious.

After the tragic news was confirmed the Lechlade-on-Thames community have set up a fundraiser on behalf of Jake's family.
