Local Elections 2024: No overall majority for Gloucester City Council

People across the county went to the polls yesterday.

People have been voting for all of the seats on Gloucester City, Cheltenham Borough and Stroud District.

The Liberal Democrats are now the largest party on Gloucester City Council. But there is no overall majority. Despite the Conservatives running the administration for over 20 years.

The Conservatives made significant losses and now have 11 seats, whilst the Liberal Democrats have 17 seats. Labour took 7 of the seats and the remaining 4 went to Independent candidates.

Meanwhile the Liberal Democrats have retained control of Cheltenham Borough Council. There are now no Conservative councillors on the local authority.

The new make up of the Borough Council is 36 Liberal Democrats, three Greens, one People Against Bureaucracy. The Liberal Democrats took 52% of the vote, the Conservative 25%, the Greens 16%, Labour 5% and PAB 2%.

Whilst the results of the Stroud District Council elections are expected to be announced on Saturday 4 May.

More than 2,600 council seats across 107 councils were up for grabs in England, alongside 11 mayoral elections, a parliamentary seat and police and crime commissioners throughout England and Wales

Voting took place on Thursday 2 May between 07:00 and 22:00.
