People in Gloucestershire concerned over the "uncertainty" of energy bills as energy prices cotninue to rise.

Citizen's Advice in Gloucestershire say they've seen a huge increase in the number of people calling for help after finding it difficult to pay their bills.

It comes as the chief executive of British Gas owner Centrica, said soaring energy prices could last for another two years.

"All they are hearing is that there will be massive hikes in energy prices but they're not being told how much it's actually going to be", says Charlotte Bentham, an energy advisor for Citizen's Advice in Gloucestershire.

"I know it's been calculated at about ÂŁ600 pounds a year - that's ÂŁ50 a month which is a huge amount.

"And obviously in the winter for people who are on pre-payment meters will be really suffering because that will really hit them hard."

Concerns have been raised that people are deciding to turn their heating off completely to try to save money which may lead to health issues.

Charlotte added: "People should keep an eye out for anyone they visit who might have hypothermia.

"People who are scared about their energy costs may start turning their heating off. if they aren't very active, especially elderley people, then this could be dangerous.

"So if anyone is visiting a family member of friend and their house is cold, make sure they understand the importance of keeping warm."

How can you save money on energy this winter?

Although it seems impossible to make a big dent in your monthly energy bill at the moment, there are a few things you can do which might make a small difference.

  • Do a physical acitivity when you're aware you're getting cold, like a short walk, hoovering/cleaning, or cooking.
  • Keep a thermometer in the house to keey an eye on the temperature of the room
  • Put a blanket on your lap when sitting down to watch the television or read
  • Use a hot water bottle
  • If you have children, get them to do their homework in the same room so you don't have to heat multiple rooms of the house
  • Contact your local council to find out what grants are available to put towards insulating your home or towards your energy bills
