Gloucestershire's Fire Service warning do not let fire ruin Christmas

They are urging people to follow safety advice and enjoy the festive period responsibly.

Gloucestershire Fire Service are asking people to be careful when buying new appliances.

Many of us will gift electricals this Christmas, the service warn people to check products are from reputable traders.

They also warn electricals should never be left charging overnight.

The service are urging people to test smoke alarms, and ensure there is an alarm on every level of the house.

When it comes to Christmas decorations, the fire service said not to leave candles unattended and make sure fairy lights are turned off before you go to bed.

Donna Potts, Head of Prevention, said around half of accidental house fires are caused through cooking.

She said: "We would expected if we are getting incidents around the festive period it will be caused by things going wrong when people are cooking.

"Check you don't have loose wiring, make sure things you have bought that need charging are from a good retailer and that you are charging them safely during the day.

"If you have family and friends staying make sure people know how to get out.

"Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home."
