Springbank Community Group, in Cheltenham, opened their doors to residents affected by a house fire.

Emergency services were called to Springbank Way, shortly after 9pm on Thursday (1/2) to reports a bungalow had caught fire.

Five home were evacuated. The community centre served hot drinks and provided a warm space for people who needed support.

Just hours before, Springbank Community Group received an award for their services to the community.

Director, Lyam Galpin said they were collecting a No Child Left Behind Cheltenham award before receiving a call about the fire.

Lyam Galpin, said: "At seven o'clock we were celebrating in Cheltenham Town Hall, and by ten o'clock we were all systems go. It was completely crazy but we like to think we can support the community in those situations.

"We decided we had no choice but to open our doors for the community."

"It was quite an intense and stressful situation for everyone involved so having somewhere they could go to was really beneficial."

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Services are investigating the cause of the fire.
