Arrest after man "thrown into canal" in Gloucester

Police say an arrest has been made after reports a man was thrown into the canal in Gloucester.

It's said to have happened near the Old Prison on Westgate Street at around 12.15pm.

Emergency services, including from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Severn Area Rescue Association, rushed to the scene.

A man in his 30s was pulled from the water shortly afterwards and was taken to hospital for checks.

Gloucestershire Police say a number of people were in the area at the time. They particularly want to speak to a member of the public who tried to help the man when he was in the water.

A man in his 40s has been arrested and is currently being questioned on suspicion of assault.
