A 40-year-old woman has died after being run over by a car in Glasgow city centre.

The incident on Wellington Lane at around 2.40 on Tuesday afternoon sparked a huge emergency service response, with police, ambulance and fire service staff sent to the scene and a large section of Wellington Street cordoned off for a number of hours.

Police Scotland has now confirmed a woman, who was lying on the ground, was hit by a car and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was uninjured.

The woman's family has been informed.

Inquiries have established the woman was dropped off in Wellington Lane prior to her being struck by the vehicle.

A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course, but police say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Detective Sergeant Sean McLoughlin said: "We are continuing to investigate the circumstances around this incident. A family has lost a loved one and it's imperative we provide answers as to how that happened. If anyone has any information, who has not yet spoken to us, please do get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 2027 of 13 August 2024.
