A three-year-old boy had to be rushed into surgery after being bitten on the face by a dog in Irvine.

At around 6pm on Thursday, the dog – described as a cream-coloured Staffordshire Bull Terrier type – attacked the youngster in the Castlepark area of the town.

It was then seen running off in the direction of Leven Place.

The child received facial injuries and required surgery at University Hospital Crosshouse.

Police are now appealing for anyone who might have witnesses what happened or recognise the description of the dog.

Inspector Lisa Thomson said: "We are keen to trace this dog and it's owners as quickly as possible.

"Anyone who witnessed what happened, or who may have information that could help identify the owner of the dog responsible, is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1674 of 21 February, 2025.”
