Steven Smith set to take interim charge of Rangers
Last updated 16th Oct 2025
Steven Smith will take interim charge of Rangers for Saturday's Premiership match against Dundee United.
The Ibrox side are still without a head coach after Russell Martin was sacked 11 days ago.
Under-19's boss Smith has been taking training along with Brian Gilmour, Rhys Owen and Sal Bibbo.
Club chiefs had hoped to have a permanent manager appointed during the international break but were unable to do so.
It's understood they are closing in on a deal to appoint Kevin Muscat, who may not be able to take charge until the Chinese Super League season finishes towards the end of November.
Muscat has emerged as the frontrunner after Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl both withdrew their names from consideration.
Smith is expected to speak at Friday's pre-match press conference before stepping into the dugout the following day.
They sit eighth in the Scottish Premiership - 11 points behind league leaders Hearts and nine points behind rivals Celtic.
It is not yet known whether Smith will take the team for Thursday's Europa League clash away to Brann.
