Renfrewshire tennis courts in line to receive a major investment
Three tennis courts could receive more than £300,000 from a national project
Run-down tennis courts in Renfrewshire could receive a major investment of more than £300,000 if councillors approve plans for the transformation.
Provided for by the Lawn Tennis Association, it is part of the nationwide Parks Tennis Project.
Refurbishment and development works would be supported with almost £130,000 for Robertson Park in Renfrew, while £155,500 could be paid for Park Road in Johnstone and nearly £18,100 for Brodie Park in Paisley.
The investment is subject to the council contributing £17,000 towards the works and financing wall repairs.
Plans include a tarmac replacement for the surface at Robertson Park and Park Road, which is expected to offer good playing conditions for between 20 and 30 years.
Brodie Park will undergo minor repairs as it already has tarmac installed.
Councillor Andy Steel said the local community has been long waiting for the refurbishments.
"It's been a long struggle to get this funding, it's been seven years I've been trying.
"It really is tremendous to see this investment in the tennis courts.
"It's been a long time since tennis in Renfrewshire saw this level of investment," he added.
Councillor Steel said the reason why these tennis courts are in such an abandoned condition is that because "they have simply fallen down the list of priorities".
But he added they can be part of the plan to build up after covid, "to get people out the house, to take exercise and treat things like childhood obesity".
The joint project is a UK-wide scheme by the LTA and the UK Government, aiming to refurbish public tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition, and open the sport to more people.
The refurbished courts will offer a variety of play options including free play and annual memberships.
