A North Ayrshire school is being praised for its commitment to re-engaging young people with their learning.

An inspection by Education Scotland found staff at Radio City School in Kilbirnie provide welcoming and supportive learning spaces and develop positive relationships with pupils.

Key strengths

The specialist school, which provides education and care services to children and young people aged 8-18 years, had several areas in which their approach and efforts were recognised:

• Senior leaders and staff’s skills and commitment to re-engaging young people with their learning. They provide welcoming and supportive learning spaces and develop positive relationships through nurturing approaches, which ensure that learning activities are motivating and meaningful.

• The rich opportunities for young people to achieve a broad range of awards and certificates within the school, the community and through outdoor learning.

• Staff’s creative use of the learning environment and access to digital technologies which are supporting young people to engage in learning and creative activities.

The assessment made sure the wellbeing of staff wasn't forgotten.

Boosting morale

But it's not just the welfare of pupils that was front of mid for investigators.

Staff confidence was highlighted as an area for improvement.

An excerpt from Education Scotland's letter said: "Senior leaders should proceed with their plans to build staff confidence and develop their skills in assessing and moderating young people’s progress and attainment."
