A public hearing is scheduled for today to determine the future of the historic Vogue Cinema in Possilpark.
The 1933 art deco landmark, originally known as the Mecca Picture House, was designed by renowned Scottish architect James McKissack and has been a significant part of Glasgow's architectural heritage.
The building's current owner, Allied Vehicles, has proposed demolishing the structure to make way for new developments.
This plan has faced considerable opposition from the local community.
In November 2024, resident Andrew Moore launched a petition urging Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government, and Historic Environment Scotland to intervene and prevent the demolition.
The petition has garnered substantial support, reflecting the community's commitment to preserving the cinema's historical significance.
The Vogue Cinema has a rich history, having served as a cultural hub since its opening.
After ceasing operations as a cinema in April 1968, the building was repurposed as a bingo hall and later housed retail businesses, including A1 Kilt Hire.
Its architectural design features distinctive red sandstone and faience, making it a prominent landmark in the Possilpark area.
In December 2023, Allied Vehicles commenced demolition work after obtaining permission from Glasgow City Council.
However, the council issued a Building Preservation Notice in January 2024, effectively halting further demolition and providing temporary protection for the building.
Despite this, partial demolition had already begun, including the removal of half of the auditorium roof.
The building was subsequently granted Category C listed status in June 2024, offering it some degree of protection.
Allied Vehicles has appealed against the decision to list the building, arguing that the structure's condition and their development plans necessitate its removal.
The outcome of today's public hearing will be crucial in determining whether the Vogue Cinema will be preserved or face demolition.
We have reached out to Allied Vehicles for comment.
