Glasgow City Parents Group has announced that it is taking legal action against Glasgow City Council over proposed cuts to education.

It comes after the council passed budget cuts that will see 450 teaching posts axed across the city over the next three years.

GCPG says that the council failed to fulfil its legal duties after agreeing to the cuts in June without conducting a full and proper Equalities Impact Assessment.

GCPG Chair, Leanne McGuire, called this omission of the mandatory EQIA “a clear violation of the council’s legal obligations.”

She is requesting an immediate halt to the implementation of the cuts and a commitment from the council to revisit their decision-making process.

She said: “It's worrying that council officials and councilors feel that they can make impactful decisions without due process.”

In failing to conduct an EQIA she has accused the council of acting “without a comprehensive understanding of their impact on all pupils, particularly those who are most vulnerable.”

She says her organisation will continue challenge the cuts, which are “not just numbers on a budget sheet” but that “represent a real and immediate threat to the quality of education that all of Glasgow's children and young people deserve.”

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “We have received legal correspondence that our lawyers are now reviewing.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
