One week to go until 76th Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund trip to Troon
Pupils at Hazelwood Primary School are getting ready for the event
With just one week to go until the annual Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund trip to Troon, pupils are Hazelwood Primary School have been getting ready for the journey.
This year marks the 76th anniversary of the first trip to Saltcoats in 1945 and will see more than 300 children with additional support needs head for a day at the seaside, with more that 100 taxi drivers.
The taxis will drive from Kelvin Way to Ayrshire, and the vehicles will be decorated to celebrate the occasion, as well as the drivers being dressed up.
Chairman of the fund, Jim Buchanan hopes the day will be magical, saying: “We look forward to seeing the Glasgow public giving us the usual rousing send-off from Kelvin Way in the morning as we convoy through Glasgow – then the atmosphere being every bit as special as we arrive in Troon. Bring it on!”
Parent, Jacqueline Cameron, who works at Hazelwood, has been to the event with her son, Cameron, several times, but this year will be their last trip together as he is coming to the end of primary school.
She said: “he loves seeing the taxis all decorated, and the drivers all dressed up, and it’s just great how everyone supports them, and come out and wave them all off when we’re driving through Glasgow.”
She added the drivers are one of the biggest reasons the event has been able to run for so long, saying: “they’re giving up a day to do it, so that’s really good of them that they’re giving up their time to come and do it, so I think everyone supports them for doing that.”
The fund is looking for a small number of additional drivers to make sure every child who wants to come from different schools in the Glasgow area can.
Treasurer of the fund, Stephen Lalley said: “Drivers can get in touch with the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund directly and, as always, we know they will step up to the plate.”
