Off The Beatson Track's biggest ever 10k takes over Glasgow
Thousands of yellow clad walkers set off on the 10k this morning
Beatson Cancer Charity’s tenth anniversary Off the Beatson Track walk set off from the Riverside Museum this morning.
It was the biggest ever event, with over 2,500 people taking on the 10k to raise money for patients and families facing cancer.
Since the event started more than 14,000 people have walked over 86,800 miles.
Alexandra Richie from Glasgow will be taking part in this year’s event after going through treatment at The Beatson when she was younger, and again more recently following a breast cancer diagnosis.
The 41 year old said: “I’m currently recovering from chemotherapy and a double mastectomy following a breast cancer diagnosis in November last year.
“My treatment was in The Beatson and as much as it’s not a nice place to have to go, the staff were lovely, very helpful, informative and caring.”
She is taking part with her 9 year old son Adam, sister Laura, and 2 year old nephew, Josh, adding: “I want to do something to give back to a place that has cared for me so well over the years - and probably more years to come, although hopefully only for checkups.
“I want to let everyone at The Beatson know what a fantastic job they do and that their work definitely makes a difference.”
Every year the Beatson sees more than 8,000 new patients, delivering over 25,000 courses of chemotherapy and 6,500 of radiotherapy.
Organiser for Off the Beatson Track, Maisie McCormack said: “It’s quite overwhelming that I feel like I might cry at some point because you get to know so many of the people that do it year on year.
“There’s so many people turned out to help, we’ve got 300 people out on the route who’re going to be entertaining the walkers as they pass, so it’s a big deal.”
