We're being encouraged to walk, cycle or take the bus instead of the car

Today marks World Car Free Day.

It will see towns and cities all over the world allowing people to experience streets free of motor traffic.

People across Glasgow and the west are being asked to "go greener" and not get behind the wheel for short journeys to reduce their carbon emissions.

Living Streets, the charity behind the initiative, wants walking to be our first choice for local journeys.

Claire Daly from Sustrans Scotland which promotes active travel told us: "Maybe you could combine your journey, walk a bit, take a bus for part of the way. Try cycling.

"I know in Glasgow some really good infrastructure has gone in."

But there could be a down side to the initiative.

There is a warning an initiative asking people to leave the car behind for the next 24 hours could mean taxi drivers in Glasgow lose business over the weekend.

John Wallace who does private hires says: "A lot of people probably struggle to keep their car on the road as it is.

"I feel this is just another way of going down a road of demonising cars to later on hammer them financially."
