A violent sex attacker described as a "monster", from Motherwell, has been jailed for seven years at the High Court in Glasgow.

Anthony Brazil repeatedly tormented two women including raping both.

The 35 year-old - who is deaf and requires the use of a sign interpreter - was sentenced today.

He had earlier been convicted of a total of eight charges after a trial in August.

The crimes spanned between December 2006 and August 2020 in Lanarkshire.

Sickening tirade of abuse

Jurors heard how Brazil verbally abused the first woman, locked her in a flat, broke her laptop and hair straighteners as well as demanded sex from her.

He went on to rape and indecently assault her at his home in Motherwell, South Lanarkshire.

Brazil was physically and sexually abusive with the second victim.

As well as being raped, prosecutors said this also included him breaking her finger, hurling hot food at her as well as punching, kicking and pushing the woman.

The thug cut up her clothes, tried to control who she could visit and claimed the only person she could "trust" was him.

Sick Brazil further took an intimate photo of the woman without her knowing.

He had denied the charges.

Defence's plea to jury

His lawyer Lewis Kennedy accepted at the trial Brazil's behaviour could have been described as "chauvinistic", but asked jurors if "he was really the monster" the women had portrayed him to be.

The defence advocate today said Brazil's hearing loss had made it "more difficult to adjust" while on remand than it would have been for most prisoners.

Sentencing, judge Lord Arthurson told Brazil: "You exercised a significant degree of coercive control.

"Your criminal behaviour was vicious, cruel and manipulative.

"It is very clear that the damage inflicted by you (on the women) will be long lasting and incalculable."

Brazil was also put on the sex offenders list. He was further banned from contacting or approaching the victims.

Both were for an indefinite period.
