Steven Gerrard is in pole position to become the next Rangers manager, with Russell Martin set to join Leicester City.

Rangers have intensified their search for Philippe Clement's replacement over the past fortnight, with several candidates on their shortlist.

Reports at the start of this week suggested Gerrard and Martin were in a two-horse race to become the next boss at Ibrox.

However, ex-Southampton manager Russell Martin now looks set to take the Leicester job in the English championship.

It means former boss Gerrard is now the preferred choice, with his appointment possible by the end of this week.

Gerrard, who has been out of work since leaving Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, first took over at Ibrox in 2018.

He led the club to their 55th league title, stopping Celtic winning 10-in-a-row in the process, but left for Aston Villa in 2021.

Martin also has a history in Govan, having played 15 times for the club during a loan spell eight years ago.
