A building site has been closed off in Greenock as emergency crews deal with a gas leak.

Police Scotland has confirmed the leak at the site of the former Greenock Academy.

A number of road closures are in place around the site, which is building 30 new homes.

Newark Street, Madeira Street and Eldon Street are all affected and drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 2.52pm on Monday, 2 September, to reports of a gas mains leak on Madeira Street in Greenock.

"Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance to the scene as a precaution.

"Crews remain at the scene."
