Funding boost to transform historic Glasgow meat market
The iconic B-listed Victorian sheds just off Bellgrove Street have been empty for decades.
Plans to transform the historic meat market in the East End of Glasgow are getting a 2.3m shot in the arm from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Work to turn the abandoned ground across from Bellgrove Station into a park with restaurants and bars is expected to begin next spring.
City council leader Susan Aitken told Greatest Hits Radio: "There will also be a sports centre with a focus on minority sports like badminton, archery and kabaddi will all be played here.
"This area is not the most savoury place at the moment, it's an amazing piece of heritage which has not been treated in the best way for a long time.
"When I look around I can see broken glass, a bit of dead pigeon and it's certainly not an asset to the community at the moment."
The grant will help to retain and restore the B-listed Victorian sheds and put the history of the site at the heart of its future.
It's hoped construction will be finished by December 2026 or January 2027.
Patrick Flynn is the chair of Glasgow Meat Market Regeneration and said: "There were 17 banks in and around the meat market when it was active.
"There were also a number of pubs, candle makers and sausage makers.
"We want to make sure we help to teach people about the story of this place so that it will be remembered by future generations."
