East Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire increase council tax
Councillors have been meeting to thrash out their spending plans.
Council tax for homes in East Renfrewshire is going up by 8% in an attempt to fill a £7m spending gap.
But people in South Lanarkshire will be paying an extra 6% from April and the local authority says it plans to increase the school clothing grant by £20.
Proposals to cut the number of music tutors in schools were also rejected by councillors after a backlash from the community.
Leader Joe Fagan said: "Instead, we will look to find genuine efficiencies in the music equipment, we are prepared to accept efficiencies but we are not prepared to accept cuts to music provision.
"The 6% increase in council tax allows us to bring down the budget gap over the next few years, but it also allows us to borrow to invest.
"We are using that to roll out a building back programme right across South Lanarkshire to try to put the years of under investment behind us."
The Building Back Programme of investment includes £12 million for roads and transportation infrastructure – to upgrade roads and infrastructure.
£24 million for modernising the council’s buildings and facilities – to meet net zero targets and improve energy efficiency.
£8 million for Hamilton town centre – to kickstart the Council’s regeneration Master Plan following the £50 million plan for East Kilbride.
Joe added: “Conscious of continued uncertainty over Scottish Government grant levels, councillors also took action to reduce the Council’s budget gap next year and the year after, putting long-term stability over boom and bust budgeting.
"The extra investment we are making is only possible because we are being disciplined in allocating our recurring budget, which remains under pressure."
