Concerns have been raised over women’s safety after a submariner was jailed yesterday for a sex attack at Faslane naval base last year.

25-year-old Jack Seviour groped the woman in Navy accommodation in March 2023, while on bail for another sex offence.

Seviour also committed sex attacks on two other women between January 2022 and February 2023.

He was claimed to have recorded one of the attacks on his mobile and later described his actions as 'rapey'.

Seviour was able to carry on working for the Royal Navy despite being bailed for one of the attacks before striking again at Faslane.

Seviour was found guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court of three sexual assaults.

The court heard that Seviour, of Plymouth, Devon, had been a weapons engineer submariner for five years.

Seviour and his colleague who was an engineer at Faslane were at an afterparty in the building where he stayed on site.

A friend who saw the woman the next day described her as "sobbing" when she recounted what had happened to her.

“This is a really concerning case."

Sandy Brindley, Chief Executive of Rape Crisis Scotland said: “This is a really concerning case of what is clearly a serial perpetrator, who has been able to commit really quite serious sexual attacks while out on bail for a sexual offence.

“This is always a really worrying circumstance to see in terms of the protection of the public, and particularly, the protection of women.

“It women’s safety really needs to be the priority when any decisions are being made surrounding bail and sexual offences.”

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: “We treat all reports of unacceptable behaviour extremely seriously and will not tolerate anything which falls short of the high standards we expect from our Service Personnel.

"It would be inappropriate for us to comment while legal proceedings are ongoing.”

Harrowing details of previous attacks

The trial yesterday was also told of an earlier incident when Seviour met a woman from dating app Tinder at her student accommodation in Glasgow's Townhead.

The pair had sex, but Seviour carried out sex acts which she did not consent to.

A third woman told the court that she had also met Seviour on Tinder and went to her student accommodation also in Townhead.

She claimed that Seviour spat on her face and body during consensual sex.

He also grabbed her by the throat, legs, arms and breasts during intercourse on another occasion. The woman was left bruised.

Seviour claimed to jurors that his victims' evidence had been "fabricated" and all three woman had lied.

Iain Smith, defending, told the court after the verdict: "He has been told that if he is convicted he will lose his job."

Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Louise Arrol KC.

She said: "This was a course of conduct over 14 months on three women.

"You are no longer a suitable candidate for bail and you will be remanded in custody."
