A 9 year old girl from Barrhead is taking on Ben Lomond for charity today.

Lola-Rose Wood and her dad, George, are climbing the Munro to raise money for the Beatson Cancer Charity, who have been caring for her great-grandfather since December.

It's the biggest hill the pair have climbed together, but they’ve been out practising to get ready.

George said: “We do go on quite a lot of hikes together, me Lola and Limara, Lola’s mum, but this is the first real hill climb.

“She’s done Conic Hill before at Balmaha and she did well with that, so this is the next stage up.”

The pair chose the charity who have been looking after Lola's great-grandfather

They have also been making the most of the good weather and using their practice to have picnics on the Craigie.

The pair were hoping to raise £200 for the charity, but they have been met with overwhelming support since they started their campaign.

Before the challenge even started, they’d smashed their target, and George said: “I think we’ve got around £1300 just now, as it stands.

“Myself and Lola’s mum are still to put stuff into it as well, so it’s due to get more out in, so it’s going really, really well.”

The pair have raised more than £1300 already

Lola’s walk is to help out the people who have been looking after her great-grandfather, but it will also help her get her charity badge with the Brownies.

She said: “I’m enjoying to do the actual challenge, but I’m also enjoying to see the nice view, but my favourite part of it is going to be when I finish.”

The Beatson Cancer Charity is based in Glasgow and sees more than 8000 new patients every year.

George thinks that now is the time to offer as much help as they can, saying: “cancer’s one of those diseases that affects probably every one of us in life at some point, we all know someone who has, or had, or has died of, or has passed away from cancer.

“The support they give to families even after the death is really, really good, so I think it’s a really go thing to support them and help them every way we can just now.”

The pair are accepting donations for the charity through their JustGiving page.
