A vigilant member of the public strolling along the Walton-on-the-Naze nature reserve area on Thursday, December 14, alerted local police to the unexpected discovery of three unexploded Second World War mortar rounds washed up on the beach during low tide.

Local law enforcement, working in tandem with the Coastguard, swiftly implemented safety measures by establishing a secure perimeter cordon. Recognizing the potential danger posed by the wartime ordnance, authorities called in experts from the Army disposal unit to ensure the safe destruction of the hazardous materials at the scene.

Walton Coastguard Rescue team say there were three suspected ordnance’s on the beach.

The three items where confirmed to be WW2 ordnance’s by EOD to which the Coastguard team placed a 100m cordon surrounding the area for protection to members of the public and our colleagues.

EOD then conducted a controlled detonation of all three items making them and the area safe.

Saying "Please be mindful of what you find on the beach. If you spot what you believe to be an ordnance on the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard".
