Three people have been convicted for their roles in an attempted murder after a man was lured to a flat in Waltham Abbey and shot in the leg on 24 November 2024.

The victim was called by 41-year-old Margit Knap, who asked him to drive to Howard Close, unaware that others were waiting to attack him. When he arrived just ten minutes later, he was assaulted by 27-year-old Amir Mahamud of Garfield Road, Enfield, and 30-year-old Hamidreza Nasiri of Holbrook Close, Enfield. As the victim escaped and fled to his car, one of the suspects fired three shots, injuring his leg as he drove away. The victim received urgent medical attention after crashing his car nearby.

Police responded within minutes, promptly arresting Knap at the scene. Investigations, including enquiries, CCTV reviews, and forensic analysis, led detectives to arrest Nasiri two days later and Mahamud in January 2025. Digital evidence showed that phones linked to Nasiri and Mahamud were used for drug dealing, with numerous messages about Class A and B drug supplies found on their devices.

All three denied involvement but were convicted at Basildon Crown Court today (Monday, 6 October), Nasiri and Mahamud were found guilty of attempted murder and possession of a firearm. Mahamud was also convicted of involvement in the supply of cannabis and cocaine, while Nasiri had previously pleaded guilty to those drug offences. Knap was convicted of assisting in the commission of serious violence.

All three have been remanded in custody and are due to be sentenced on Friday (10 October).

Detective Sergeant David Crane commented after the verdict: “The victim in this case was lured to the scene. He could have been killed. Nasiri and Mahamud knew this was a possibility when they conspired to bring a firearm to the address that day, and did so anyway. The shooting took place on a residential street during daylight hours endangering the safety of the public. We are glad that the jury have agreed with our investigation and the prosecution, and we await the sentencing of these defendants. I would like to praise the members of public who came forward to assist us with this case and also my team of detectives who have worked tirelessly to bring these individuals to justice."
